What are the optimal & closest viewing distances for a 16:9 ratio home theatre screen measuring 124″ diagonal
I am working on the specifications for a home theatre setup. The couch is currently 14 feet away from the wall where I will mount the screen. I’m trying to figure out how big the screen should be. I want to know if there is a rule-of-thumb ratio between screen diagonal, screen width or screen heigth. I can move the couch, and adjust other things, including opting for a smaller screen. I am positively going to purchase a front projector, most likely based on DLP technology. Also, I am going to purchase a professional screen (to receive the image from the projector). Finally, the room lighting can be near pitch black, BUT it is likely that there will be ambient light, since we will be building a bar at the back of the room as well.
Welcome to the Home Theater experience.
For a start, you have to decide on the projector that you want.
The reason is that the projector has its specification on throw distance.
Normally for a small Home Theater set, the lens is fixed unless you are choosing a professional set.
To cut the story short, you may go to http://www.projectorcentral.com/
On the left, scroll down and look for Calculator Pro.
Click on it and you will get to the page which reads Projection Calculator Pro.
Just fill up the 2 blanks…the brand and the model which you have decided to purchase…and bingo, you have all the answers.
Now I will go to your other question with regards to the rule of thumb on screen size and sitting distance.

Good luck to you and all the best in your selections.
